American Baritone Thomas Woodman’s unique versatility in opera, orchestra and recital repertoire has helped him enjoy a varied and successful career throughout North America and Europe.
Recent performances include the Mozart Requiem with the Fairfield County Chorale and Kingston Chorale (UK), and Mahler’s 8th Symphony at Carnegie Hall with the Canterbury Chorale. In addition, he performed at Lincoln Center with the Little Orchestra Society’s presentation of Amahl and the Night Visitors. Recent performances have also included Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra, performances of the role of Jesus in the St. Matthew Passion with the Greenwich Choral Society, and the Brahm’s Requiem with the New Jersey Symphony.
Highlights of Woodman’s career include performances with the Metropolitan Opera (Valentin in Faust and Wolfram in Tannhäuser); die Bayerische Staatsoper (Harlekin in Ariadne auf Naxos, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, both conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly and Ping in Turandot, under the baton of Guiseppe Patane, and Herr Fluth in Die Lustige Wieber von Windsor); San Francisco Opera (Ping in Turandot -- Myung Whung Chung conductor, Der Herrufer in Lohengrin -- with Heinrich Hollreiser conducting and Peter Hofmann as Lohengrin, Pilar Lorengar as Elsa, Leonie Rysanek in her first Ortrud, and Hermann Becht as Telramund— and Père Germont in La Traviata); New York City Opera (Conte Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Marcello in La Bohème). His European debut was with the Staatstheater Darmstadt as Der Sekretär in Henze's Der Junge Lord.
Extensive Operatic and Orchestral Experience:
Woodman's European engagements include performances with Opera de St. Etienne (Michonnet in Adriana Lecouvrer), Opera Nice (Schaunard in La Bohème), Deustche Oper am Rhein-Duisberg and Theater Hagen (Harlekin), Theater Augsburg am Roten Tor (Ping) and further performances as resident baritone with the Staatstheater Darmstadt to include such roles as Marcello,Guglielmo, Harlekin, Rodrigo in Don Carlos, Dandini in La Cenerentola and Ravenal in Showboat. Mr. Woodman also sang Mahler 's 8th Symphony with the Orchestra National de Lyons.
In the United States he has appeared with the opera companies of Austin and Fort Worth (Texas), Hawaii, Indianapolis, Kentucky, Illinois, North Carolina, Anchorage, Mobile, Buffalo as well as Triangle Opera (North Carolina and Wildwood Opera (Arkansas) and Opera North (New Hampshire).
He has performed Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Nashville, Waterbury (Connecticut) Cape Cod (Massachusetts) Symphonies as well as the Rochester Philharmonic. He has performed the Mahler's 8th Symphony with the Knoxville Symphony, the Hartford Symphony as well as with The Canterbury Chorale at Carnegie Hall. His numerous performances of Handel's Messiah have included performances with the Virginia, Stockton (California), Springfield (Massachusetts) and Michigan State University Symphonies as well performances at Carnegie Hall with The Masterworks Chorale and with The National Chorale at Avery Fisher Hall.
Woodman was born and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut and is a graduate of the Hartt School of Music. He was a 1979 winner of the Connecticut Opera Association Competition and was a 1980 Metropolitan Opera National Council Award winner. In 1980 he participated in the Merola Opera Program with The San Francisco Opera and subsequently became The Readers Digest Affiliate Artist's with the San Francisco Opera.
Woodman currently resides in Fairfield, Connecticut with his wife Carol. He maintains voice studios in both Fairfield and in Greenwich, Connecticut, under the auspices of Greenwich Adult Continuing Education (GACE).
